2023 / 2024 Northumberland Chess League

We have again added another team in the NCA league this season!!! We now have 8 adult teams and 1 junior team (only junor team in NCA). We will produce a brief report each month with an update to how all our teams are doing.

Full fixtures and tables can be found by clicking here.

1st November update - What a good start!!!!

Gosforth Empire - Division 1

2 away games under our belts and 2 draws againt South Shields A and Leam Lane A.  This is a steady start to the season but the best may to come as our A team has been strenthend this year.

Gosforth Salters - Division 2

1 win against our own Regents and 1 draw against a very strong University A team means that the Salters are sitting at the top of Division 2. A long way to go in this supper tough Division

Gosforth Regents- Division 2

After losing thier first game to our Salters they bounced back to beat Forest Hall Foxes to lie middle of a very tought Division 2.

Gosforth Centurions- Division 3

A win against our Ivy team leaves them midle of the pack, a win against Forest Hall Woodpeckers on Friday could see them reach the top of the table.

Gosforth Ivy - Division 3

A slow start to the season means 2 defeats in the first 2 game, this is a big step up for our team after getting promoted last season. Playing the top two teams so far, will be a challanging year for the Ivy.

Gosforth Hawthorns - Division 4

After a suprise defeat against our Woodbines in the first match they have bounced straight back with a win and a draw to place them in second place (playoff spot) after 3 games.

Gosforth Woodbines - Division 4

Pulling an upset in round 1 against the higher rated Hawthorns boosted the teams spirits, another solid draw in their second match means they are mid table after 2 games.

Gosforth Jedis - Division 5

Our juniors are here again scaring the entire division with thier fearless play, after two games we have 1 win and 1 defeat leaving them mid table. Will be interesting to see how these young guns get on this season after missing out on promotion in the playoffs last year.

Gosforth Otterburns - Division 6

Our newest team got off to a flyer with a win away to South Shield then back to earth with a defeat against Newcatle B. This however was a game that could have easily went our way.  Great effort so far conisdering most of these guys have never played competitive chess before.

2022 / 2023 Northumberland Chess League

This year we added 2 new teams to our roster, Gosforth Woodbines and Gosforth Jedis. For the 2022 / 2023 season we entered 8 teams in total over the 5 Northumberland Chess Association leagues.  What is more impressive is the Jedis are the only all junior team in the entire NCA!!

See below how each of our teams did over the season:

Gosforth Empire

Division 1 - 3rd

After losing some keyplayers our A team have over perfomed for a second season in a row. Our aim was to stay in Division A and we did that with ease!!

Well done everyone on a solid season.

Captain: Dave Armbruster

Gosforth Salters

Division 2 - 2nd

After leading all season a defeat in the final game to Jesmond meant we played Tynemouth A in the playoffs. Sadly Tynemouth won the playoffs to keep their place in Division 1. Next year our team will be pushing for promotion!!

Great effort!!

Captain: Mike Riding

Gosforth Regents

Division 2 - 3rd

After a very rocky start to the season the team looked as if we would fight for survival!  In the second half of the season the team started to put a string of results together to finish 3rd in the league!!

Great season.

Captain: Mark McKay

Gosforth Centurions

Division 3 - 3rd

Arguably the hardest Division over the 5 leagues!!!  With Newcastle University and Forest Hall B fielding teams that could compete for promotion in Division 2 it was always going to be a hard season.  That said we still had promotion hopes on the last day of the season!

Amazing performance from the whole team!!

Captain: Ian Chester

Gosforth Ivy

Division 4 - Champions

It looked like the Ivy were going to run away with the season starting with 4 wins from 4. Forest Hall D made a us fight hard till the very end but managed to win with a game to spare!!

Amazing season, well done all!!

Captain: Antonio Stipanovic

Gosforth Hawthorns

Division 4 - 3rd

After losing 3 out oftheir first 4 games it looked like the Hawthorns could be fighting for survival this season.

Once this realisation kicked in the team went on an amazing run that kept them unbeaten till the very last game of the season!

Great come back finishing the season on a high!!

Captain: Bob Heyman

Gosforth Woodbines

Division 5 - Champions

As Gosforth Chess Club continues to grow we added a brand new team, over the season 11 players took part as a development team.   They always looked favourites to win the league and only lost 1 game all season!!

New team, new players but fantastic results!!

Captain: Laura Steven

Gosforth Jedis

Division 5 - 2nd

A brand new team full of juniors had the rest of the adult teams shaking in their boots!!  Only losing 2 games put them in the play offs against Morpeth C.  Sadly we lost the play off match but that takes nothing away from a fantastic season!!

So proud to boast the only junior team in the league. Big well done to all that took part!!

Captain: Mick Riding
